Overview
Heidelberg Materials UK, a leading supplier of building materials, has consistently demonstrated a commitment to innovation and sustainability. In line with its digital transformation strategy, the company became the first in the UK to implement the Loadrite L5000 wheel loader scale. This move underscores Heidelberg Materials UK's dedication to enhancing operational efficiency and reducing environmental impact.

The Challenge
Efficient loadout operations are crucial in the construction materials industry. Traditional methods often involve manual processes that can lead to inaccuracies, increased cycle times, and higher operational costs. Heidelberg Materials UK sought a solution that would provide real-time data, improve load accuracy, and streamline operations across its sites.

The Solution: Loadrite L5000
The Loadrite L5000 is an advanced onboard weighing system designed to enhance loader productivity. Key features include:
  • High-Resolution Display: A 7-inch touchscreen offering improved visibility and user interface.
  • Superior Accuracy: Utilizes ground slope compensation and digital sensing technology for precise weighing.
  • Real-Time Data Integration: Built-in Wi-Fi and GPS enable connectivity to the InsightHQ cloud portal, allowing for performance tracking and reporting.
  • eTicketing: Facilitates the digital generation and distribution of load tickets, reducing paperwork and enhancing efficiency.
By adopting the L5000, Heidelberg Materials UK aimed to modernize its loadout processes, ensuring faster truck turnaround times and more accurate billing.

Implementation
The integration of the Loadrite L5000 was carried out in collaboration with Loadrite's UK distributor, Halomec Ltd. The system was installed on select wheel loaders at numerous sites, with operators receiving training on its use and capabilities. The transition to the new system was smooth, with minimal disruption to ongoing operations.

Results
The deployment of the Loadrite L5000 has yielded significant benefits for Heidelberg Materials UK:
  • Enhanced Efficiency: Real-time data access has streamlined loadout operations, reducing cycle times and improving overall productivity.
  • Improved Accuracy: The system's precision has minimized loading errors, leading to more accurate deliveries and billing.
  • Sustainability: By optimizing loadout processes, the company has reduced fuel consumption and emissions associated with idle times.

Conclusion
Heidelberg Materials UK's adoption of the Loadrite L5000 wheel loader scale marks a significant step towards modernizing its operations. By embracing innovative technologies, the company continues to lead the way in operational excellence and environmental responsibility within the construction materials industry.

Overview
In a sector where uptime, efficiency, and data transparency are vital, Blackwood Plant Hire Ltd continues to lead from the front. As a forward-thinking plant hire business, the company recently made a major digital leap by becoming the first UK customer to implement Hiboo, the innovative equipment data platform designed to simplify fleet management and maximise asset productivity.

The Challenge
Like many plant hire companies operating a mixed fleet, Blackwood faced the growing challenge of consolidating data from multiple telematics providers and machine brands. Fleet managers were spending valuable time switching between portals and manually compiling information to get a clear picture of utilisation, idling, fuel use, and maintenance needs.
They needed a centralised platform that could bring all machine data together in one place—regardless of manufacturer—and provide actionable insights to drive operational efficiency.

The Solution: Hiboo
Partnering with Halomec, Blackwood Plant Hire became the first company in the UK to adopt Hiboo.
Hiboo is a cloud-based platform that aggregates telematics data from all connected assets—whether it's from OEM systems, third-party trackers, or manual inputs—into one easy-to-use dashboard. It transforms raw data into clear, visualised insights for maintenance planning, cost control, and improved utilisation.
Through Halomec’s support, Blackwood was able to:
  • Connect their entire fleet, regardless of brand
  • Access real-time and historical data on usage, fuel consumption, and engine hours
  • Track maintenance intervals and reduce unplanned downtime
  • Simplify reporting and decision-making across departments

The Impact
Since onboarding Hiboo, Blackwood Plant Hire has seen a notable improvement in how they manage their fleet day-to-day. By eliminating the need to log into multiple systems, they’ve gained back time and visibility—both critical in a competitive market.
Early benefits include:
  • Streamlined fleet management with one login and one platform
  • Improved asset utilisation through clear insight into idle time and workload
  • Creating value on both sides of the rental relationship through data sharing
  • Greater confidence in maintenance scheduling and machine health tracking
  • A scalable digital solution that grows with their business

A Word from the Team
“Hiboo has given us the transparency we’ve been looking for across our fleet. We can now make faster, more informed decisions without juggling half a dozen telematics portals. It’s a real game-changer—and we’re proud to be the first in the UK to be using it.”
— Paul McCormack MD speaking with Journalist, Peter Haddock

Contract Crushing Challenge

Picture
Welsh Slate’s Penrhyn Quarry produces some of the finest slate and slate products in the UK with a unique reputation for durability, quality and variety.

A lesser known part of the operation is the aggregate side of the business, producing materials for construction, industrial and decorative applications.

Extraction, crushing and screening operations have recently been contracted out to Hawk Contracts utilising a Metso Lokotrack LT1213S impact crusher and a Powerscreen 2100X screen.

Traditional methods of production measurement such as stock pile surveying are time consuming, inaccurate and provide only low resolution historic data.

Loadrite solutions can help to overcome these challenges.

Evidencing Production

Trimble® Loadrite scales installed on the Powerscreen provide real-time productivity measurement and stock input tonnages, giving contractor and client a basis for charging.

Remote Reporting

Live productivity figures can be viewed on any internet connected device, whilst more in-depth productivity reporting can be  generated through Loadrite InsightHQ web-based reporting.

Equipment Reports

Equipment reports give managers daily information on plant utilisation with useful metrics such as ‘black belt’ time and percentage utilisation.

Product Reports

Product reports give live stockpile additions and individual product breakdown versus infeed tonnages.

Flexible Reporting

Managers can tailor reports to meet their own personal requirements, for example senior managers may be interested in monthly production figures whilst supervisors could be interested in hourly production output.

A Game Of Two Halves

Sometimes challenges just come your way. Hitachi asked us to install one of our Lincoln autolube systems on a ZW370 wheel loader; a fine machine, for anyone in the market for a 34-tonne, 5+ M^3 machine.

Events, I should stress out of our control, meant the installation commenced by Roger in Tyne and Wear,  was finished by Robin in Somerset!

Another 'show kept on the road'.  But your are only as good as your last 'performance'...
